To Use, or Not to Use E-books. That Is the Question.

Thanks to new technology that is being invented every day, life has become increasingly simple and concise. There are gadgets that introduced almost daily which are meant to replace â€Å"outdated† and â€Å"old† ways of living. The invention of e-books was one such creation that was made to make the lives of readers easier and simpler. However, are traditional paper books truly better than e-books? If so, or if not, why? It is time to settle the score. E-books hit the shelves and were (and still are) huge. Visiting a bookstore or waiting for a book to arrive at the house, for many people, takes much too long. Life, today, is all about doing precise work in a short amount of time, and e-books are a way to help consumers do just that. As commented on by Mohsin Hamid of the New York Times, â€Å"The advantages of e-books are clear †¦ I can read an intriguing review of a book†¦and with the click of a button be reading that book in an instant† (Hamid). Hami d also later commented on the convenience of many features that e-books possess, â€Å"it is possible to vary the size of the font†¦e-books can be read in the dark, self-illuminated† (Hamid). An e-reader can also hold at least a thousand or more books without any extra weight, making e-readers very useful for traveling. Educational Philosophies Influence Curriculum From The...

Abstract Educational philosophies influence curriculum from the establishment of the American school systems. The five major philosophies that have influence American education are: 1) Idealism, 2) Essentialism, 3) Perennialism, 4) Progressivism, and 5) Experimentalism. Idealism, Essentialism, and Perennialism are all teacher-based philosophies putting the teacher at the core of the educational experience, with students being passive members of the classroom. In contrast, Progressivism and Experimentalism are student-centered philosophies that focus on the child and their contribution and participation in the formation of classroom experiences, using teachers as guides to help students in their educational development. Although the philosophies differ, many of them define curriculum as a encompassing unit of goals, methods, materials and assessment. Introduction Since the establishment of America’s first schools, the American people have disagreed not only about what the purpose of school is, but also about what schools should teach. Initially schools were supposed to â€Å"prepare men to vote intelligently and prepare women to train their sons properly. Moral training based on the Protestant Bible would produce virtuous, well-behaved citizens [who knew not only] the three R’s but [also] the general principles of law, commerce, money, and government† (Kaestle, 1983, p. 5). Movie Analysis Blue Velvet - 2152 Words

The camera descends from a picture-perfect blue sky to a bed of red roses before a white picket fence, opening with the lush colors of America. A fire engine rolls down an idyllic suburban street as the firemen wave in slow-motion, a crossing guard directs schoolchildren, and a man waters his front lawn, all to the tune of chirping birds and Bobby Vinton’s romantic â€Å"Blue Velvet† song. This could be the opening sequence to a convincing infomercial inviting American families to suburbia, until something bizarre occurs. We close in on the man’s hose mysteriously gargling and tangling, and we witness him collapse from a brutal stroke. The camera then penetrates the slick grass and reveals the teeming and voracious insects chewing away at a saturated version of small-town America. Lynch meets the conventions of Hollywood cinema within Blue Velvet, but transforms them all to discover new truths. In what could have been a tired Hollywood clichà ©, the opening sequence becomes a mutated vision of America with illness, insects, haunting noises, and a soundtrack exploited of its innocence. A straightforward detective story, which could’ve been mistaken for 1950’s film-noir, becomes a perverted exploration in which the detectives become participants in the sordid underworld. David Lynch’s twisted use of visual motifs, as well as his disrupted narratives and dream logic easily classify him as a surrealist, following in the tradition of Luis Buà ±uel or Salvador Dali.
